In 2011, the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program, Wisconsin Sea Grant and Association of State Floodplain Managers partnered to build upon the efforts of University of Wisconsin Senior Scientist and Emeritus Professor David Mickelson. In 1976-1978 and 2007-2008, Mickelson flew and captured oblique photography of Wisconsin's Lake Superior and Michigan shoreline as a part of his research. These photos have been made available to the general public. Additionally, they have been used to classify the health of Wisconsin's coastal bluffs, depending on observed erosion. This view tool allows users to view images from the 1970s and late 200s side-by-side, allowing them to visualize coastal change. In addition, bluffs have been analyzed and classified as stable, moderately stable, moderately unstable, or failing.
